Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) on Tuesday said it has created 14 biotechnopreneurs in Gujarat recently.

This is the Institute’s third batch of budding biotechnopreneurs after the first batch was created in 2011-12 and the second in 2013-14.

The Institute has trained students and professionals in the field of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and biomedical engineering through its biotechnopreneur programme. Its 10-month, week-end programme is supported by the Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission (GSBTM).

EDII, along with the state government, has been carrying out interventions to strengthen the ecosystem that promotes innovation in the life sciences and biotechnology sector, Prof Bipin Shah, Programme Director and Senior Faculty, EDII, said.

“This 10-month custom-tailored programme integrates practical as well as academic knowledge with hands-on industrial exposure to ensure holistic growth of participants to support and fund the new enterprise. This is achieved through a combination of multi-disciplinary curricula and pedagogy, which allow utilisation of acquired skills in setting up the biotech venture.”

The participants gain business insights on biotechnology entrepreneurship and acquire technical skill-sets to build career opportunities in various domains of biotechnology, Dr. Sunil Shukla, Director, EDII said.

The biotechnology industry in Gujarat has an estimated size of about Rs 4,000 crore. The pharmaceuticals and healthcare sector contributes a major share of the industry at 46 per cent (Rs 1,823 crore), followed by agriculture biotechnology contributing about 21 per cent (Rs 834 crore). There are 154 registered biotechnology firms in Gujarat, of which 21 firms have revenues ranging between Rs 50 and Rs 500 crore.

EDII is an international resource centre facilitating all facets of entrepreneurship development. Its mission is to be a catalyst in facilitating emergence of competent first generation entrepreneurs and transition of existing SMEs into growth-oriented enterprises through entrepreneurship education, training, research and institution-building.
