At the 43rd WorldSkills competition at Sao Paulo, Brazil, eight candidates from India bagged Medallion for Excellence in various skills.

Over 1200 competitors from 60 countries are said to have participated in the competition this year.

Sunil Kumar Sharma of Gedee Technical Training Institute (GTTI) in Coimbatore was among the eight that returned home with the Medallion for Excellence in the Plastic Die Engineering skills category.

GTTI has been participating in the World Skills Competition since 2007. A candidate from the institute won a Silver Medal, the first ever medal for India at Calgary, Canada in 2009 for Plastic Die Engineering skill, GTTI sources told Business Line.

Participants from India took part in as many as 27 skill categories in the 2015 event, the source said and pointed out that the competition, also known as Skills Olympics are held in different countries every two years to compete in more than 46 skills.

“The student is given a design/ drawing. He/ she should make a mould in the skill category that he is competing in 20 hours and the mould should work,” the source explained.
