Inching towards the 50,000-mark, India recorded up to 49,391 confirmed cases of Covid-19 as of May 6, including 14,183 recoveries and 1,694 deaths. In all, 2,680 new cases were recorded in the past 24 hours, with 111 deaths.
Maharashtra alone accounts for a sizeable chunk of cases at 15,525 (up to 31 per cent of all cases in the country), 2,819 recoveries and 617 deaths. Close on its heels is Gujarat with 6,245 cases, 1,381 recoveries and 368 deaths. Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Wednesday held meetings with Maharashtra Health MinisterRajesh Tope and Gujarat Health Minister Nitinbhai Patel.
Vardhan expressed concern over the high fatality rate in certain districts of Maharashtra, stating that Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad and Nagpur were the worst affected. The remote districts of Gadhchiroli and Wardha have been spared of the virus for now, he added. Other districts such as Gondia, Osmanabad, Beed, Ahmednagar and Bhandara had reported no cases for at least a week now.
“Implementation of an effective containment strategy needs to be the top priority of States to reduce the mortality rate,” said Vardhan.
He pointed out that districts such as Aurangabad and Pune have taken the help of community volunteers in containment areas at the ward-level to spread awareness about hand-washing and physical distancing and that must be emulated by other districts.
