Karnataka’s Energy Department in association with Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), a public energy service company under the administration of the Ministry of Power, has distributed over 50 lakh LED bulbs under the UJALA (Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for all) scheme popularly known as ‘Hosa Belaku’ in Karnataka.
With distribution of over 50 lakh LED bulbs since its launch three months ago, the people of Karnataka have come forward in encouraging numbers to make their homes and, in turn, the state energy efficient.
Efficient domestic lighting is one of the largest contributors to energy savings globally. Distribution of 50 lakh LED bulbs in Karnataka has led to daily energy savings of over 17 lakh kWh, which is capable of lighting over 1.2 lakh homes for 365 days. Alongside the savings in units, the state has also benefitted from daily CO2 emission reduction of 1,440 tonnes.
About 300 million people in India still don’t have access to electricity. In an energy-starved nation like India, switching to options having more sustainability in terms of recurring cost incurred for energy bills will usher in a brighter future in the days to come.
