There is need to regulate over-fishing along the coast and to conserve fish species for the future, the Karnataka Fisheries Minister has said.

Speaking at a 'Meet-the-Press' programme organised by the Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists' Union in Mangaluru on Wednesday, Pramod Madhwaraj, Karnataka Fisheries Minister, said there is need to regulate fishing activities along the coast in the interest of the conservation of fish species.

Fishermen who go deep into the sea for fishing, sell nearly 80 per cent of their catch to the fish processing units, and the rest to the domestic market. If the processing units did not buy the juvenile fish from fishermen, it would help control over-exploitation of marine fisheries resources.

He said the Karnataka Fisheries Ministry is planning to appoint inspectors to regulate the movement of fish from fishermen to the processing units. The proposal is to appoint an inspector at each fish processing unit. The salary of the official would have to be borne by the processing unit concerned.

Stating that he has held discussions with processing units on the matter, he said the Karnataka Fisheries Ministry was preparing a working paper on this.

Madhwaraj said he has requested the Agriculture Ministry to organise a conference on conserving fisheries resources. Ministers from all the coastal states should be invited for the conference.

Karnataka wants to be ready with a working paper on conserving marine fisheries resources at the conference, he said.
