The Karnataka government will simplify procedures for getting new ration cards under the public distribution system (PDS), according UT Khader, Karnataka Minister for Food and Civil Supplies.

Speaking to presspersons in Mangaluru on Saturday, he said that the government is planning to simplify the procedures to obtain a ration card. As of now, a person has to fulfil 14 conditions to get a ration card. These conditions will be simplified and brought down to four, he said.

A proposal in this regard will be placed before the State Cabinet soon, he said.

The government will soon begin the supply of double fortified salt to consumers under the PDS. Salt, which is fortified with iodine and iron content, will help reduce anemia and iodine-deficiency disorders, he added.
