A day before the election results were declared Congress candidate Milind Deora from Mumbai South constituency tweeted America’s former historian and politician Theodore Roosevelt’s words on the micro blogging website.

Deora tweeted, “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat & blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold & timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”

It seems that Deora had sensed the Modi wave and doubted his third-time victory well before the Election Commission declared it on Friday.

A two-time Member of Parliament and Union minister of State for Communication and Information technology, Deora lost to a lesser known Shiv Sena’s Arvind Sawant by a big margin of 1.5 lakh votes.

After the loss, in a statement Deora said, "The voters of South Mumbai Parliamentary Constituency had elected me to the Parliament in 2004 and 2009. It was my privilege to represent my constituents in Delhi and serve them back home. I thank them wholeheartedly for the legislative opportunities they had given me. The election result of 2014 has made a choice otherwise and I accept it with humility. 

“I express deep gratitude to my voters, young campaigners, political workers and friends who gave me unflinching support throughout the campaign.  Serving the people of South Mumbai is matter of great honour and I promise to do so as their Ex-MP.”  

He also wished Modi on the victory and said, “I congratulate the NDA and Mr. Narendra Modi and hope India moves forward, economically and socially, under his leadership. I also congratulate Arvind Sawant and look forward to supporting him on any initiative that's for the betterment of South Mumbai."
