A day after the Opposition parties decided to “expose” the BJP’s attempts to politicise anti-terrorist operations of the defence forces, leaders from various parties attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “mega video conference” with over one crore booth-level BJP workers.

The Opposition had earlier urged the PM to postpone it. “At this moment, we as a nation, need to spend all our energy and time to get the IAF pilot (Abhinandan) back safely and to sternly deal with Pakistan,” tweeted Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

SP-BSP hits out at BJP

BSP supremo Mayawati said the PM betrayed the sentiments of the country. “At a time when India is facing the hostility of war and the country needs firm leadership, Modi, instead of concentrating on matters of national security, is trying to serve political interest by addressing his BJP workers. This is ridiculous and a betrayal of national sentiments,” she said.

“Indian forces foiled Pakistani attack yesterday. It is a matter of big relief. But an IAF pilot under Pak custody is a matter of great concern. India should ensure his safe return,” she added.

Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said even the BJP supporters are ashamed of Modi’s actions. “The situation could be very bad but this suited-booted BJP will continue with its festivities... Condemnable,” he said.

Congress flays Modi

The Congress too condemned Modi’s actions and said the conduct of the BJP is a matter of grave anguish. “Ever since the pre-emptive non-military strikes were carried by the government, the Congress postponed its Working Committee meeting and various other political programmes associated with it,” said party spokesperson Manish Tewari.

“When the nation is looking towards its leadership, the Prime Minister chooses to address the booth workers of the BJP rather than addressing the nation,” Tewari added.

The Congress also condemned the political statements of BJP President Amit Shah, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and senior leader BS Yeddyurappa. “They play into the hands of Pakistani propaganda. We would like to tell the BJP that they need to rein in their motormouths,” Tewari said
