The Opposition has demanded a judicial probe into the leak of the CBSE’s class X and XII question papers and demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi sack HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar and CBSE Chairperson Anita Karwal from their posts.

Even as the Delhi Police launched an investigation into the matter, the Opposition alleged that the incompetency of the Centre was apparent in the way the board examinations were held.

Congress’ media in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala said a mafia was behind the question paper leak. “The truth is you (the Centre) have filled up CBSE with your favourite officers. The truth is you have failed to implement adequate safe guards. The truth is HRD ministry and the CBSE undid the strongest measures against cheating and leakage of examination that was three set of exam papers to the same set of students and division of country in four zones,” said Surjewala.

He said instead of addressing the problem, the BJP was relying on rhetoric. “India and India’s students demands answers, accountability and fixation of responsibility,” he said. “Time to fix accountability and sack Javadekar and Karwal,” he demanded.

He said given that the future of 24 lakh students was at stake, there should be an independent probe by sitting judge of the Delhi High Court. “In fact, Modi government has done a PhD in ruining institutions. First they nurtured the ‘Vyapam Virus’ in Madhya Pradesh, then they spread the same patented virus throughout the country in the multi-layered SSC Scam and now they have not even spared our students,” he alleged.

The CPI(M) said no section of Indians has been spared the “terrible consequences” of the present government's “incompetence”. “Now, young students too. Modi could focus on this instead of tamashas like exam warriors,” said CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, taking a dig at the Prime Minister’s book meant for students.
