NITI Aayog Chief Ministers’ sub-group is planning to take up various models/ projects under Swachh Bharat Mission.

Chandrababu Naidu, Chairman of the sub-group, said, “We discussed various models under Swachh Bharat Mission such as waste to energy, composting, public and community toilets.”

“In majority of the models, government cannot alone do it. We need to develop models to involve private sector through public private partnership (PPP) in a major way,” he added.

The Chief Ministers’ sub-group had earlier toured West Bengal, Maharastra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka to study best practices and viable projects.

“We are exploring ways that waste also should generate some wealth. Here various options of associating private sector through public private partnership (PPP) were discussed at today’s meet. In course of time we will formulate an action plan.”

Waste to energy

“About 1.34 lakh tonnes of waste is generated in the country daily. With it, around 1,033 MW power can be generated after all recyclable materials are segregated,” he said.

As per the Report of Task Force on Waste to Energy, 2014, municipal waste generated in the country is around 1,33,760 tonnes daily.

Top five States generating waste are Uttar Pradesh 19,180 tonnes, Maharashtra 17,000 tonnes, Tamil Nadu 14,532 tonnes, Andhra Pradesh 11,500 tonnes and West Bengal 8,674 tonnes

Third meet

The meet in Bengaluru is third of the NITI Aayog Chief Ministers’ sub-group. It had met in Delhi and Chandigarh earlier.

He pointed out that six different sub-groups were constituted and they have studied best practices and technologies for solid waste and liquid waste managements.

Naidu said best technology practices, cost-effective solutions and sustainability will be the sole motive for any projects to be recommended to Swachh Bharat Mission.
