In its first national convention, Swaraj Abhiyan – the outfit led by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) founders and expelled leaders Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan – has decided to form a political party.
The new political party will be formally launched on October 2, observed as the birthday of Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.
The decision to form a political party was taken after extensive discussions on the need for “alternative politics” in the country and was decided by a vote on the proposal during the ongoing national convention, a Swaraj Abhiyan release said, adding that 92.5 per cent of the 433 delegates voted in favour of it. A six-member committee, headed by Ajit Jha, has been set up to finalise the modalities before the announcement on October 2. The convention also appointed professor Anand Kumar as its National President. Christina Sami, Avik Saha, Purshottam and PS Sharada as Vice-Presidents, Fahim Khan as General Secretary and Girish Nandgaonkar and Rajiv Dhyani as Secretaries.
The Yadav-Bhushan duo along with Kumar and Jha were expelled in April 2015 by AAP for “gross indiscipline and anti-party activities.”
