The Telangana Government has asked the Centre to convert 1,018 km–long State highways into national high ways. It would submit a memorandum to the Union Transport Minister who is going to visit the State on Wednesday.
The Union Minister is slated to lay foundation stone for work on two road development projects in the State. The average length of national highways was on the lower side in Telangana when compared with the other Southern States.
In a review meeting held here on Tuesday, Telangana Roads and Buildings Minister T Nageshwara Rao said there were six important stretches in different State highways that needed to be upgraded to national highways.
He also took stock of the road development project that sought to connect all the mandal (taluq) headquarters with the respective district headquarters with two-lane roads. The project is being taken up with an outlay of Rs 10,800 crore.
