The Tamil Nadu Assembly has adopted a resolution, unanimously opposing Karnataka Government’s plan to build a dam at Mekedatu or any other site across the Cauvery river.

A specially-convened session of the Assembly passed the resolution moved by Chief Minister K Palaniswami on Thursday evening.

“Despite the Supreme Court’s judgment that the upper riparian states should not implement any projects without the consent of the lower riparian states, as well as resolutions passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly, the Government of Karnataka has proposed to commence preliminary works to construct a dam at Mekedatu,” according to the resolution.

Tamil Nadu strongly condemned and opposed this action of the Karnataka Government and the Central Water Commission for having given permission to Karnataka last month to prepare a detailed project report (DPR).

The Assembly urged the Union Ministry of Water Resources to immediately order the Central Water Commission to withdraw the permission given to Karnataka for preparing the DPR, it said.

Fear among people

It also urged the Centre to direct the Karnataka Government not to take up any construction works either by it or through its agencies at Mekedatu or at any other place in the Cauvery river base of Karnataka without the consent of Tamil Nadu and in violation of the final order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and the judgment of the Supreme Court.

PM intervention

Last week, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking his intervention to withdraw the permission given to Karnataka government for preparation of DPR, stating that the development had caused great alarm and apprehension among the people of Tamil Nadu as it will affect the livelihood of lakhs of farmers who depend on Cauvery water.

It is learnt that Karnataka government is proposing a dam project near Mekedatu across the river Cauvery to supply drinking water to Bengaluru and recharge the groundwater table in the region.
