Considering the need to meet the requirements of senior citizens, a company in Dakshina Kannada has come forward to set up an exclusive township for them in the district.
Addressing presspersons in Mangaluru on Monday, Shama Bhat, Chairman and Managing Director of Navachethan Retirement Residency (P) Ltd, said an exclusive township for senior citizens will come up at Shantigod (and 50 km from Mangaluru) in Puttur taluk of Dakshina Kannada district.
Loneliness
Asked why senior citizens need a separate township, he said many houses in rural and urban areas of the district have become ‘old-age homes’ as only aged couples live in such houses. Their children are settled either abroad or in other cities.
Though the health conditions of many of these people need constant attention, hardly anyone is there to take care of them.
Stating that Navachethan’s project is not an old-age home, he said it will be an exclusive township for senior citizens with all the facilities needed for them.
Coming up on an area of 10 acres at Shantigod, the township project is a mixture of independent houses and apartment blocks. Around 200 families can be accommodated in the Shantigod township, Bhat said, adding that the cost of residential units ranges from ₹8 lakh for a studio apartment to ₹33 lakh for a 1,250 sq ft independent house.
Facilities
Each of these units will have intercom and panic button facilities. Provisions will also be there to opt for food from the central kitchen. Since more attention is needed on the food habits of senior citizens, measures will be taken to provide food based on their health requirements, he said.
Apart from regular health check-ups of senior citizens, steps will be taken to provide medical care to them at the township, he added.
