Villagers demanding compensation for their land on Tuesday took out a demonstration at an installation of Essar Oil at Jathgoria in the Burdwan district of West Bengal.

The work was also stopped at the installation following the demonstration, Burdwan Superintendent of Police SMH Mirza said, according to a PTI report.

A number of company employees were briefly detained yesterday by the villagers demanding compensation for land.

Company representatives on Tuesday had met the State Commerce and Industries Minister Partha Chatterjee at Writers’ Buildings.

The company in a written statement said, “We would like to clarify that this was a minor incidence involving some of our employees who were constrained from discharging their duties. The local district administration was aware of the challenges we were facing.  We have apprised the authorities of the recent developments and have been promised all cooperation.”

“Additionally as a responsible corporate citizen, the Essar Group has always followed the norms of corporate governance and lives in harmony with local community. We would like to reiterate our commitment towards the region and the people of Raniganj who have supported us throughout our journey in the state of West Bengal,” the statement added.
