The West Bengal government is planning to push entrepreneurship in frontier areas of IT that include likes of new technologies, artificial intelligence, fin-tech and cyber security.

According to Debasish Sen, Additional Chief Secretary – IT and Electronics, the government has already given a Cabinet go ahead to set up a ‘Centre of Excellence for Cyber Security’. The cyber security institute will come up on a private-public-partnership basis with IIIT being the knowledge partner.

Also proposed is a fin-tech hub on a 17 acre plot in the satellite township of New Town in the north eastern fringes of the city. The hub will focus on companies that work on upcoming technologies in the BFSI and related sectors. This apart, orientation courses on new technology, are also being carried out by WEBEL – the state-run IT facilitating agency.

“We do not want to miss the bus this time and are encouraging entrepreneurship in areas like AI, cyber security, IoT and robotics.... The main idea is to create an eco-system and attract the talent,” Sen said at a programme organised by the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The State government will also look to promote the various IT parks in Tier-II locations like Siliguri, Durgapur and so on. The focus will be on a cluster approach.
