Our Bureau The nature of the JD(S)-Congress coalition is expected to take shape after HD Kumaraswamy, President of JD(S), meets Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi and party President Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on Monday.
A day after BS Yeddyurappa stepping down without facing the floor test, a jubilant JD(S)-Congress combine declared it a ‘victory of democracy’ and spent the weekend hammering out the details of the alliance, such as the common minimum programme (CMP) and formation of co-ordination committee. While these were discussed here on Sunday, the plan will likely be formalised in Delhi tomorrow.
Former Chief Minister and Congress Legislature Party leader Siddaramaiah on Saturday had said his party had extended support to the JD(S) to keep a check on BJP. “Despite fighting elections separately, we have got together post elections to work through a ‘common minimum programme’,” he said.
Kumaraswamy, who has been given 15 days by the Governor to prove his majority, is likely to take oath on May 23 and face a trust vote the next day. All eyes are also on the election of the Speaker.
Meanwhile, all the MLAs of the respective parties continue to be in “protective custody”.
On Saturday, Yeddyurappa delivered a 12-minute speech and said he was resigning as Chief Minister without seeking a confidence vote after moving the motion.
