Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Vikram, which was commissioned in Chennai on April 11, arrived at New Mangalore, its base port, on Sunday.
Designed and built by Larsen & Turbo Ltd, Chennai, ICGS Vikram is the first in class of seven new generation offshore patrol vessels contracted by the Defence Ministry to L&T in March 2015.
A press release from the Coast Guard said the ship's keel was laid in March 2016, and the commissioning was completed in 25 months. The ship is designed to carry one twin-engine light helicopter. It has the capabilities to carry pollution response equipment to contain oil spill contamination at sea. With a complement of 14 officers and 88 men, ICGS Vikram is commanded by Commandant Rajkamal Sinha.
The release said ICGS Vikram will boost Coast Guard’s operational capabilities to discharge multifarious maritime tasks on western seaboard in general and Karnataka in particular.
