Measuring up to the challenge thrown at it by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Noida-based Uflex, which specialises in flexible packaging materials, has developed a specialised metallic film that can be used for space applications.

Called Both Side Aluminised Polyester, the material is used for protecting spacecraft components in outer space where they are subjected to extremely high temperatures and bombardment by highly ionised particles.

The aluminised polyester film, with a thickness of 8 micron , was tested by ISRO’s UR Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru. In a certificate of appreciation given to the firm last week, ISRO said it would use the product, initially for ground-level spacecraft tests and, if the performance is found satisfactory, subsequently on space missions.

“We are happy that ISRO found our product worthy of being used in space missions. ISRO approached us some time back as it has been relying on imported material for the missions. We have been able to make it in the country,” said Rajesh Bhatia, Chief Financial Officer, Uflex.

ISRO said, “We develop many technologies in-house and approach industries for support in productionisation. We believe the technology and the expertise available within the country must be utilised to achieve self-reliance in space technology.”

“The most gratifying part of this whole engagement is that Uflex has been able to contribute to ISRO’s endeavour of indigenisation and becoming self-reliant in space technology applications,” said Ashok Chaturvedi, CMD, Uflex, in a release.
