There are 103 pathology laboratories for coronavirus testing in Maharashtra, including 60 government and 43 private laboratories. Between May 26-June 20, the number of such laboratories has increased by 30, said State Health Minister, Rajesh Tope in a media statement.
The Minister said that on March 9, when the first coronavirus patient was found in the State, pathology tests could only be conducted at Mumbai and Pune. After that, the number of laboratories has been added day after day by the State government. In Maharashtra, the number of laboratory samples tested is 5,847 per million population, while at the all-India level it is 4,610.
The State is conducting the highest number of tests in the country and consistent efforts have been made to increase the capacity for conducting the tests in the last three months. Last week Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray inaugurated large testing facilities at Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and GT Hospital in Mumbai, he said.
Till Sunday, 7.73 lakh samples had been sent to the pathology laboratories out of, which 1.32 lakh samples have been tested positive for coronavirus. Out of the total number of samples tested only 17 per cent were found to be positive, he added.
