Carriage & Wagon Works of Southern Railways, which undertakes periodic overhauling of coaches and wagons, has signed a 10-year agreement with UltraTech Cement Ltd, Ariyalur, in southern Tamil Nadu, to dispose of zero-value waste from the workshop.

Every year, the workshop located in Perumbur with around 5,000 staff, turns out 2,200 coaches and 3,600 wagons after periodic overhauling.

Some of the zero-value waste to be handed to the cement factory are rexin, cushion, coir and thermocol. Nearly 3,000 tonnes of such waste is generated annually and this disposal management gives a major relief to the workshop against fire threat, pollution and unnecessary space occupation, a press release from Southern Railways said.

The accumulated waste will be transported to the cement factory in goods carriers where it would be used in the cement kilns after shredding.

The waste will be burnt at 1,400 degree centigrade in the cement kilns, leaving behind no residue.

The co- processing of waste will bring down the fossil fuel requirements of the cement factory by acting as an alternative fuel, thereby reducing cost besides meeting the statutory requirements of using alternative fuel. The first lot of waste consisting of waste rexin, cushion, coir and LP sheet was dispatched to the cement factory on Wednesday, the release added.
