A fourth of the buildings under construction in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation are unauthorised.
And another fourth of the buildings have majorly deviated from the norm, with additional floors and setback deviations from the sanctioned plan, according to a study report communicated to the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy.
According to GHMC, the survey showed that a major part of the unauthorised constructions are in plots below 500 sq.m and more so in plots of land below 200 sq.m. These permissions relate to ground-plus-one but additional floors are constructed.
Officials of the Corporation, who met the Chief Minister on Monday, said that the GHMC area has grown to be 635 sq.km and has a population of about 7.75 million, according to the 2011 census and needs significantly expanded infrastructure.
The Government is considering constituting Town Planning Tribunal as this is expected to go a long way in dealing with the litigation in this regard.
Reviewing various issues relating to the Corporation, the Chief Minister agreed to a proposal to register the properties and private electricity and water connections if they come under approved plans and layouts.
He felt that this is the only way to control the illegal and unauthorised construction in its limits, according to statement from the Chief Minister’s Office.
During the meeting, the Corporation has been asked to draw up short, medium and long term strategies for traffic management, set up bus terminals, logistics hubs and seek to improve the city road network and development of pedestrian path ways.
As a part of improving the civic infrastructure, a series of new projects have been taken up. These include, Hyderabad Traffic Integrated Traffic Management System (H-Trims), construction of multi-level parking complexes, flyovers, road under bridges and road over bridges.
