Tamilnadu Chamber of Commerce has hailed the Centre’s decision to establish an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Thoppur near Madurai.
Thanking the government for accepting the Chamber's proposal, senior president of the Chamber S Rethinavelu said Thoppur is the gateway for 13 southern and south central districts. Setting up of the AIIMS there will propel industrial investment — both domestic and foreign in the industrially starved southern districts, particularly in the Madurai – Thoothukudi corridor, he said.
The Chamber has urged the Centre and State governments to initiate follow-up steps fast and complete the project within the estimated outlay of ₹1,500 crore.
Reacting to the announcement, S Gurushankar, Chairman, Meenakshi Mission Hospital, Madurai said, “Establishment of an institute of medical excellence in this region will help correct regional imbalances in the availability of quality healthcare and medical education.”
Proper planning and execution of the project within the time-frame is crucial, he added.
