The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce is “shocked and perturbed” over suggestions that the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court be closed down. “Any move by the Madras High Court to close down, even for some time, its Madurai Bench, would provoke serious repercussions and cause irremediable misery for litigants, especially trade and industry in southern Tamil Nadu,” the Chamber has said in a statement on Thursday.

Hard won The Madras High Court has said it has received suggestions that the Bench be closed down for some time, because of the behaviour of the lawyers there.

Recalling how hard won the Madurai was, S Rethinavelu, Senior President of the Chamber, said the Bench was set up in 2004 at a cost of ₹56 crore.  The Madurai Bench now serves litigants from 13 southern districts. “The innocent litigants should not be punished for no fault of theirs,” Rethinavelu said.

He fears that if cases from the southern districts are allowed to be heard in both Madurai and Madras courts (concurrent jurisdiction), all cases would slowly shift to Chennai. Litigants in the southern districts would be put to great hardship and lawyers down south would be affected, he said.
