Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry on Thursday decided to re-work plans for re-development of seven housing colonies in New Delhi.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Minister of State (Independent Charge), Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Puri amidst protests by environmentalists and Delhi residents against plans to cut down trees to redevelop these housing colonies.
“The NBCC/CPWD will re-work the design and plans for the remaining redevelopment of the seven GPRA (General Pool Residential Accommodation) colonies to avoid cutting of trees,” said an official statement.
Expression of Interest
Earlier, NBCC had floated an Expression of Interest for the acquisition of tree relocation and transplantation equipment. It also plans to engage with citizen groups to finalise the location of these transplanted trees, the statement added. It was further clarified that these will not be saplings but trees of 8-12 feet height. This plantation drive will be completed in the next three months and this will include fruit-bearing and flowering trees.
On January 9, the Ministry had taken a decision to plant more than one million trees in different parts of the national capital. Of this, about 25,000 trees will be planted by NBCC, CPWD (Central Public Works Department) will plant 50,000 trees, while DDA (Delhi Development Authority) and DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation) will plant 10 lakh and 20,000 trees respectively.
