The Uttar Pradesh Government today withdrew cases lodged against farmers of Tappal area of Aligarh during the Mayawati regime for agitating against acquisition of land for Yamuna Expressway project.

The government withdrew cases against 37 more farmers of Tappal area who were booked in August 2010 by the then Mayawati government.

“Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had promised to soon withdraw cases against innocent farmers while inaugurating the Yamuna Expressway and in its follow up the government has now withdrawn cases against 37 innocent farmers,” an official spokesman said here today.

Earlier, orders to withdraw cases against 24 other farmers were issued by the state government in April this year.

“In order to save the farmers from facing further harassment because of the court case and also in the interest of justice the cases against them have been withdrawn,” the spokesman added.

The farmers had been charged with damaging government property and running tractors on the land of Yamuna Expressway authority. They had also been accused of instigating other farmers.
