The ‘aam aadmi’ image appears to have worked for Arvind Kejriwal, but will it click for Salman Khan?

In Jai Ho, his latest flick, Khan plays a people’s man. The film has had a good opening but how well it will do at the box office will be known only after the weekend collections are totted up.

Wide releaseJai Ho has been released on 5,000 screens worldwide. Initial estimates suggest the movie could garner over Rs 20 crore on the first day, which would be lower than Dhoom-3.

A Christmas release, Dhoom-3, starring Aamir Khan, earned Rs 33 crore on day 1 (not including its Tamil and Telugu versions) .

Industry observers say that being a non-holiday release could be one of the reasons for the slow start for Jai Ho and things may pick up during the weekend.

Salman Khan has delivered several consecutive hits in the last couple of years, including Dabangg , Ready , Ek Tha Tiger , Bodyguard and Dabanng 2 .

“The movie opened extremely well in the Western and Southern regions in the morning and afternoon shows,” said PVR Cinemas COO Gautam Dutta. “But in the North, it had a slow start, given the weather. Overall, sentiment is very buoyant and should catapult the movie to bigger numbers on Saturday as well as Sunday.”

A spokesperson for North India-based SRS Cinemas Ltd said that the movie had a comparatively slow start compared to Dhoom-3 , which was marketed aggressively. But, Jai Ho is expected to see a surge during the weekend.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said the film has started off on a good note, particularly on single screens. “The film has had an extensive release with multiplexes having 23-24 shows,” he added.

In his review, trade analyst Komal Nahata said: “Salman and his action make this film entertaining fare for single-screen cinema audiences and the masses, but the response from the multiplex-frequenting audiences will be mixed.”

“Despite being a non-holiday and non-festival release, the opening has been good,” said Nandu Ahuja, Senior Vice-President (India Theatrical), Eros International, the distributor of the film.

“Going by the word-of-mouth and positive views, we expect the movie to do well during the weekend and weekdays ahead and have great collections.”

He did not give a specific figure for the first-day collections.

The distribution rights of the film, which has been co-produced by Sohail Khan, Salman Khan’s brother, have reportedly been sold to Eros International for a record amount.

The producers have sold the satellite rights to Star India.
