Anna University’s Department of Management Studies hosted Viyugam: A strategic battle , a national-level management fest, on Friday at its campus. Formerly known as Ethos , the event had K. Subramanian, CEO of Audi-Jubilant Motors, inaugurate the student festival. With a plethora of events and activities, Viyugam challenged the participants to apply their business acumen. Three hundred students from 30 colleges participated in the event.

The events included Brand-It, an adzap competition; Pic Ur Brain, a business quiz; and Senate, a debating competition, among others.

‘Showcase’, a paper presentation event, had two-person teams present case analyses. The topic for the case analysis was Brand building for small-scale industries . The teams had to analyse the fall in attendance for a Chennai-based play school, Little Flower. The teams made their case by giving their own interpretation of the school’s strengths and weaknesses, and the solution to its problem with dropout rates. The winners of the competition were Dhivya A. and Aswathy V. V. from Velammal Engineering College. Nivedhita Muthukumar and Vijesh Nair from the Institute for Technology and Management were the runners-up.

Senate, the debate competition, showed that the participants were aware of the present political scene in the country. Two groups of four students each put their arguments for and against the topic ‘Lack of governance is the reason for the economic slowdown’ in the final round of the competition. The main arguments that emerged in support of the topic were over-dependence on the US, poor corporate taxation, and poor execution of welfare schemes. The speakers against the topic pointed out that the government was trying its best to stay stable amidst global turmoil and was also attracting foreign investment. Arguments led to counter-arguments in the fight of words. Srinivas (from IFMR) and Deepak (from Centre for Management Studies, Nalsar) emerged the winners.

In Brand-It, four groups of students were selected to fight it out in the final round with RJ Ophelia and TV actor Madhan Pandian as the jury. The team from Institute of Management and Technology bagged the first prize while the team from Centre for Management Studies, Nalsar, came second.
