IIM Ranchi has its own premier cricket league now. Its sports and cultural committee organised the Ranchi Premier League: an intra-college cricket tournament. Organised along the lines of the Indian Premier League, the tournament’s format allows students to own franchises and bid for players. The team owners had to make an initial investment of ₹8,000.

The winning amount at stake was ₹48,000 which included price money amounting to ₹32,000 for the winning team, and ₹16,000 for the runners-up. Apart from this, cash prizes were awarded to the man of the match, the highest run-scorer and the highest wicket-taker.

Bidding process Prior to its commencement, team owners had to strategise and evaluate their stakes while bidding for players.

The process involved allocating each team owner a limited number of virtual points which were used to buy players for their teams. While some turned risk-takers and expended most of their points on a handful of star players, others cushioned their risks by creating a well-balanced portfolio.

The league matches turned out to be a mini-fest for sports enthusiasts. Late night studies and project submissions did not prevent anyone from taking part in the fun.

Competing teams It was not just a sports event, the entire process turned out to be a strategy- and operations-related exercise for the participating students. Eight teams participated in the tournament: The Fight Club, Hurricane Hunters, Mahan Cricket Dal, Dhurandar Dabang, Swasthik Maniacs and Berserkers United. The teams were divided into two pools out of which the semi-finalists were selected to compete against each other.

Updates of each match were posted on a dedicated Facebook page called Dharmyuddh!

Team Hurricane Hunters emerged as the winner while team Dhurandar Dabang were the runners-up.
