On the verge of entering the jobs market, are you gung-ho about your immediate future and why? This is what the PGPM students of Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai, had to say:

The Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said: “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step”, I believe my journey has just begun. As a ‘would-be’ manager my MBA has taught me to not fear change, as change is the only constant. As an individual, I’ve always been enthusiastic about change. I am looking forward the first big-change my life is going to see: working at Cognizant Technology Solutions. I feel this is the perfect time to be a part of the exciting world of technology and make a mark where it counts most. The journey into the corporate world will be full of new opportunities, exciting work and uncharted frontiers. These would also accompany their fair share of hurdles. The foundations hasbeen set by Great Lakes, my alma mater, and now it is the time for us to make a mark in our chosen fields.

With my exhilaration intensifying, my reveries post an MBA consist a man in a custom-tailored Italian suit, dropping sleep on spreadsheets, racing through airports, rising the ranks of a consulting firm, striking epic deals and boasting of a hefty pay package. Apart from career oriented goals, I also see him striving to achieve better balance between work and family. I also see him taking care of his aging parents. The man is me. Along side all this, I also hope to develop hobbies and realise many other dreams thus seeking more alignment between who I am and the job I do. But then suddenly crashing down to the present, I wonder was an MBA a good enough a reason to have sacrificed two years’ pay, take on substantial debt and miss out on hands on experience? As anxiety mounts I hope the journey ahead would be meaningful. I hope to experience romance, triumph, fulfilment and all the excitement and worry that goes with it.

The thought of pursuing an MBA after over three years of work experience was somewhat scary but having lived the last 12 months to its best makes every moment worth it. It seems like we always belonged to this place and the thought of leaving the safe confines of college looks more threatening than encouraging. But looking forward, lays another land of opportunity, waiting to be explored and discovered.

Having learnt about the different concepts and philosophies, it is time to put them into practice. It’s time to travel uncharted roads, pursue fleeting horizons and carve a niche for ourselves. It feels like we are back to where we started: a little apprehensive but full of excitement and enthusiasm to go on a maiden voyage.
