Ludhiana is an important centre of industrial development. Therefore, it’s no surprise that an industrialist from there has come up with an enterprising way of using abandoned aircraft (‘We are boarding... and lodging’ by Ashwini Phadnis, Flightplan, October 4). This is innovative, useful and profitable. All credit to Jasdeep Singh BindraSimilar to Like the ship-breaking industry, aircraft conversion is also a big business idea.

Superficial patriotism

This refers to the new rollcall protocol in schools in Madhya Pradesh which requires students to say ‘Jai Hindi’ when their names are called out. This is going too far. Let students be taught authentic Indian and world history well. This should help them draw correct lessons. A good citizen is not only patriotic but also has a broad outlook. The Indian education system should strive for that.

Smartways

This refers to ‘Smart highways are the road to the future’ by Suresh Subudhi and Vineet Vijayavargiya (October 4). Indeed there is so much we can do to use technology to not only make road travel safer but convenient as well. Using RFID cards on our vehicles and paying the toll digitally are a minuscule part of the huge potential of technology. Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari must take serious note of the suggestions and implement them so they can become mandatory in future.

Some light

It is heartening that some headway has been made in identifying the killers of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh. Nabbing her killers could also help throw light on the murder of MM Kalburgi.

Where’s humanity headed?

The Las Vegas shooting is unprecedented. The way the perpetrator conducted the heinous crime leaves many questions unanswered. Our world is turning to be a den of criminals and sick-minded murderers. God save us!

On hold

Inflation was sailing at a low level for quite some time and interest rates were cut by 25 bps, but still the growth rate has come down against the expectations of the RBI. During this time inflow was very exciting; it is the reason the rupee appreciated significantly. Without any adverse movement over and above demonetisation and GST, the external environment is changing its colour. This is corroborated by the slowdown in inflow and some reversal of gains in the the rupee. India’s problems are of a structural nature so there is hardly any advantage to gain by cutting interest rates.

Crazy mania

The selfie mania seems to have caught the imagination of youth who are unmindful of what’s around: three students were run over by a train near Bidadi while attempting to take a selfie. Adventure is natural but they must not fall prey to misadventure. Lately, there have been too many reports of selfie-related accidents

Right to rights

The decision of the apex court to revisit its earlier directive to the National Investigation Agency to investigate the case of Hadiya, a girl from Kerala who converted from Hinduism to Islam and and married a Muslim deserves praise.

The apex court had earlier upheld the verdict of the Kerala High Court which annulled the marriage of Hadiya by exercising its writ jurisdiction under Article 226 of the Constitution. As a mature girl of legal age she has the right to follow the religion of her choice and marry a man of her choice by exercising free will; Hadiya should be allowed to lead life on her own terms. It is hoped the court will restore her rights and reassert its image as a trusted democratic institution that upholds the guaranteed fundamental rights of its citizens.
