BANGALORE, Feb. 7

COMMWORKS, a 3Com company is "open to picking up equity'' in Mascon Global Ltd, the President of CommWorks, Mr Irfan Ali, has said.

However, there was no such proposal in the near future, he added.

CommWorks said that it would invest $12 million, staggered over three years in its new research and development centre in Bangalore. Operations of this centre will be managed by Mascon Global.

Such an arrangement ensures that Mascon gets a steady flow of business from CommWorks.

Currently, the centre has 30 engineers and the manpower is likely to be ramped up to 100 in a year's time, Dr Ram Udupa, President of Mascon's Communication and Technologies group, said.

Engineers at the new centre are currently working on 2G projects from China Telecom. The Asia-Pacific region was "the fastest growing market'' for CommWorks, Mr Ali said, adding that the Indian centre would help CommWorks not only to reduce capital costs but also serve its customers better through its closer proximity.
