Power Karnataka may allocate Rs 10,000 cr for power reforms Our Bureau

Bangalore , Aug. 15 THE Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr Dharam Singh, said on Sunday that the Government was planning to allocate Rs 10,000 crore for power sector reforms in association with Power Grid Corporation of India. Mr Singh, who unfurled the National Flag on the occasion of the Independence Day, said the Government was committed to implement all irrigation projects before 2005. The Chief Minister said the Government had earmarked Rs 241 crore for crop insurance, Rs 68 crore for farm seeds, Rs 100 crore each for the price stabilisation fund and watershed development programme and imposed a 6 per cent cap on interest rate on co-operative bank loans. He said the Government had allotted Rs 20 crore for setting up of a Bench of the High Court in north Karnataka. He said for the development of north Karnataka, around Rs 7,170 crore had been allotted. The Government would also urge the Centre to accord special status to the backward region of Hyderabad-Karnatak. Mr Singh said the Government had brought a new legislation for seat sharing with the ratio being 75:25 in professional courses. The fee had been fixed as per the directions of the Supreme Court. But the Government had decided to pay fees of meritorious students belonging to the poor families. The Government would not hesitate to take action against those professional colleges, which violate the law. Mr Singh said the Akshara Dasoha scheme had been extended to the seventh standard in schools and had allotted Rs 262 crore to implement the same. Allocations for social welfare department had been increased to Rs 435 crore and the Government had decided to open 30 residential schools this year, he said.
