THE Madurai United Handloom Workers Union has appealed to the Centre to bring down the price of yarn.
In a resolution adopted at the executive committee meeting held here recently, the union has noted that the increase in the price of yarn would adversely affect the handloom weavers.
While many sops have been given by the Centre to the mill sector, failure to bring down the yarn prices at the earliest would plunge the handloom sector into a crisis.
By another resolution, the union has sought coverage of all the six-and-a-half lakh weavers under the insurance scheme announced by the State Government.
It must further announce the minimum wages for the weavers as the earlier one was fixed in 2000 and funds must be allotted to the welfare board for weavers, announced in 2000, to ensure its effective functioning, it added.
