The 95th session of International Labour Conference will be held at Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, between May 30 and June 16.

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Mr N.M. Adyanthaya, Vice-President, Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), said that the 95th conference would focus on areas such as occupational safety and health and employment relationship. Mr Adyanthaya is a member of the Indian delegation to the conference.

The first discussion on occupational safety and health was held in 2003, and the second discussion will be held at the 95th conference.

Occupational hazards

Stating that two million people are dying of occupational accidents and diseases in the world, Mr Adyanthaya said most of them are from developing nations.

Many people in information technology (IT) sector are also faced with some biological and psychological hazards.

The second discussion will set standards on occupational safety and health with a view to adopt a convention.

The participating countries will have to ratify this convention and come out with a law, he said.

The second main agenda will be a session on employment relationship.

Referring to the boom in the outsourcing sector, he said this has deprived many workers of social security schemes such as provident fund, gratuity and insurance. The session will come out with a recommendation on the issue, he added. Citing the recent incidents of child labour in Bangalore, he urged the Union Government to ratify ILO convention no. 182 and come out with a law on the matter.

The convention deals with `worst form of child labour'.

Of the 178 countries in the International Labour Organisation, nearly 80 per cent of the countries have ratified this convention. India is yet to ratify it, he added.
