TV18 group targets mobile users for markets info

Ajita Shashidhar

Bets big on Internet business

Mumbai , June 9

The Television Eighteen group is shortly going to launch a mobile application, which would enable GPRS mobile users to access all the channels from the TV18 stable. Also on the cards are the launch of mobile alerts, which would give users information on the stock market, news headlines, business headlines and commodities.

Speaking to Business Line, Mr B. Saikumar, CEO, TV18 Media Network, said that the challenge was to retain audiences and monetise the various channels across platforms. "I have to ensure that I get the person on the move and also see to it that he is with me on TV as well as on the Net."

The group's Internet business (Moneycontrol.com; IBNlive.com and Commoditiescontrol.com) did extremely well last year and reportedly posted a 600 per cent revenue growth over the previous year, he said. This year, the group plans to launch some strategic portions of its Internet content in Hindi. Though Mr Saikumar didn't divulge which portions of its Internet content would be available in Hindi, he said that personal finance could be one of them. "We use TV and Net to build a sticky community and our success with Awaaz has encouraged us to launch Net content in Hindi."

He said that with all these Internet forays, the group looks at becoming India's largest online destination in the coming years.
