To speed up implementation of projects

"The State Government is determined to go ahead with its task to achieve the goal of providing water to every acre of cultivable land."

Hyderabad , Sept. 24

In a bid to ensure faster implementation of the irrigation projects in the State, the Andhra Pradesh Government is contemplating to constitute special action teams for every major and medium irrigation projects, the State Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said.

Tour's focus

Dr Reddy, who is currently in Nainital attending the Congress CMs' conference, revealed this on Sunday while reviewing the status of the arrangements for inauguration of the AMR (Alimineti Madhava Reddy) project and the Sri Pothuluri Veera Brahmendraswamy reservoir (SPVBR) next week.

According to a release from the CM's Office, Dr Reddy said the review of the status of the ongoing projects would be main focus of his tours of the districts commencing from October 7.

Responding to the compliment given by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, that other States should emulate the example of Andhra Pradesh on irrigation projects, the Chief Minister said the Jalayagnam programme would bring about a socio-economic revolution in the rural areas, the release said.

`Water to every acre'

"The State Government is determined to go ahead with its left over task, undeterred by any difficulties, so as to achieve the laudable goal of providing water to every acre of cultivable land in the State," the CM noted. Further, the press note said Dr Reddy would release water for 50,000 acres from the AMR canal (AMRP - Srisailam Left Bank Canal) in Nalgonda on September 26. The Government has already spent around Rs 566 crore on the project, which was envisaged to create irrigation potential for 2.7 lakh acres besides providing drinking water supply to fluoride-affected villages.

The UPA Chairperson, Ms Sonia Gandhi, would dedicate the project to the nation on September 27. The Rs 115-crore project was aimed at irrigating 1.2-lakh acres through the Right and Left canals, the release said.
