New Delhi , Nov. 23

Multinational telecom majors seem to be reaping big benefits from their investments in domestic telecom services firms. Malaysia's Maxis Communications Bhd has said that its Indian subsidiary, Aircel Ltd, has contributed nearly 12 per cent of its revenues for the quarter ended September. Maxis' revenue rose 25 per cent on year to RM 1.97 billion of which Aircel contributed RM 247 million.

Singapore Telecom has also said that more than half of the new subscribers from its operations across the globe had come from its join venture firm Airtel during the quarter ended September. SingTel added 8.4 million new mobile phone users across 7 countries of which Bharti Airtel accounted for nearly 4 million subscribers.

Maxis has posted a 28 per cent rise in third-quarter net profit, helped by its Indian operations where it holds a 74 per cent majority stake. The Malaysian company said that future growth opportunity lay with additional new licences in India.

Aircel has applied for additional licences to get a pan India foot print. The other major investor is Hutchison Telecom International. Hutchison has been increasing its stake in the Indian mobile company, Essar Hutchison, by acquiring all the smaller equity holders. .
