Nokia initiative to help tsunami victims

Our Bureau

Bangalore , Dec. 26

Nokia, in an attempt to resume interrupted education and resurrect lost livelihoods of the millions affected by 2004's Tsunami, has taken an initiative to help the youth become entrepreneurs.

The company has announced a series of projects to help young people find jobs or set up small businesses, building long-term livelihoods for themselves and their families. The company has spent over 3 million to immediate disaster relief and long-term reconstruction.

In association with the International Youth Foundation and the Grameen Foundation, Nokia will help thousands rebuild their communities. In India, the youth will be offered training in business enterprise and life development skills, through courses focusing on community mobilisation, problem solving and negotiation skills. The training will also encourage them to take an active role in their communities and the decision-making process within their villages.
