Hardware Web Extras - Marketing Research PC sales to cross 6.5 m: MAIT Our Bureau
Consumption in the notebook segment grew by 180 per cent against desktop, which grew by 8 per cent. MAIT projects for the fiscal 2006-07 PC sales would cross 6.5 million units. In the second quarter ended September , PC sales exceeded 1.75 million units with a sequential growth of 46 per cent and a 19 per cent year-on-year growth. Desktop sales crossed 1.5 million units with 48 per cent sequential growth, while notebook sales totalled 0.25 million units with 38 per cent sequential growth. The proportion of notebooks in the overall PC market jumped to 15 per cent during the quarter against 6 per cent last fiscal, with notebook sales recording a growth of 180 per cent.
The share of the multinational brands stood at 37 per cent in the total desktop market in H1 2006-07, registering a growth of 14 per cent y-o-y against Indian brands that witnessed a decline in their shares from 31 per cent to 23 per cent, witnessing a 20 per cent y-o-y fall. Assembled PCs, the smaller lesser known regional brands and unbranded systems grew over 27 per cent in absolute unit sales and increased market share to 40 per cent from 34 per cent of total PC sales.
The contribution from the business segment accounted for 77 per cent of sales, recording a 7 per cent growth on a y-o-y basis against households that accounted for 23 per cent of the total desktop market registering a 12 per cent growth, with sales crossing 0.57 million (5.7 lakh) units.
MAIT estimates that servers registered a growth of 16 per cent over the first half of the last financial year, fuelled by consumption from large establishments registering an increase in sales by 115 per cent and accounting for 56 per cent of the total servers market. However, sales to medium enterprises declined to 43 per cent with market proportion reducing to 21 per cent from 43 per cent. Consumption by small enterprises remained stagnant.
In sales, desktops are expected to cross 5.6 lakh units, dot-matrix 5 lakh, ink jet 8.2 lakh units and laserjet printers 5.5 lakh units as per MAIT estimates for FY 2006-07.
