Siem Reap, Cambodia, March 1

As part of its `Partners in learning' programme, Microsoft will launch an e-newsletter and an Internet portal for teachers in the Asia-Pacific region.

Mr Peter Moore, Managing Director-Public Sector, Asia-Pacific, Microsoft, said that both ventures are part of its efforts to enable sharing of the best practices among teachers and education officials in the region.

He made this announcement during the inauguration of the Microsoft Regional Innovative Teachers' Conference 2007 in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Called `Perspectives', the e-newsletter will be written by educators for educators, he said. The first issue of the newsletter will be released in April.

The `Asia-Pacific Innovative Teachers' Portal' will be operational in about a month, Mr Moore said.

Portal for teachers

Intended to encourage collaboration between teachers and educators across the region, the portal will be accessible to all those who register. It will enable users to share class notes, lesson plans and other learning and teaching resources, he pointed out.

Users will also be able to create communities on the portal and invite other users to collaborate, he added.

According to Mr Alan Yates, Managing Director, Worldwide Education-Public Sector, Microsoft, this initiative is about innovation, collaboration, partnerships and children. It is central to its mission of helping people reach their potential.

Microsoft invests $50 million a year in the `Partners in learning' programme, he said. The company, however, views this investment as a means of encouraging more such investments in education from other stakeholders, he explained.
