Gateway to fine-tune `eliminated' candidates

SECOND CHANCE

`We expect to convert about 80 per cent of such candidates into hires.'

Chennai March 30 The talent crunch among fresh graduates in India has been in the news for long.

According to IT/ITES industry reports, out of every 100 fresh graduates available, only 5 - 10 are employable. For the rest, there is now a second chance to qualify for recruitment— a few companies have come up to impart that `little extra' needed to fetch them jobs.

The Chennai-based Gateway HR Solutions is likely to enter into separate tie-ups with Zensar Technologies and another large BPO company to train candidates rejected by these two companies in the final stages of their interview process.

According to Mr S. Thiruvengadam, Chief Executive Officer, Gateway, about 40 per cent of candidates short-listed for an interview do not get hired. They are usually eliminated at the last stage— the HR interview.

"We expect to convert about 80 per cent of such candidates into hires," he said. Gateway's training division GATE will cater to this in the upcoming fiscal. However, details of skills to be imparted and the number of candidates to be trained are not yet available.

Industry sources note this as a cost-effective mechanism to make the best of available talent.

Assuming a fresher is interviewed for an entry-level job with a Rs 10,000 salary, his total recruitment cost works out to be Rs 25,000-30,000.

If he were to fail the HR interview and hence be dropped from the recruitment process, the company loses nearly all of this investment.

However, if it chose to train this candidate in the required HR skills and subsequently hire him, it would only need to invest an additional Rs 9,000 instead of Rs 25,000-30,000 on a new candidate.

In doing so, a company would also cut down the recruitment processing time and efforts by at least 70 per cent.
