Nvidia to expand in India

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Aug 1 Nvidia, a fabless semiconductor and graphics solutions company, has commissioned its Hyderabad development centre and plans to significantly step up its India presence.

The company, which employs 4,500 people globally, has 800 in India.

For the company, the region has been one of the fastest growing areas.

A significant part of the design and development work is done out of India.

Mr Jen Hsun Huang, President and CEO, said that from a start-up in 1993, the company has become a $4-billion company; a big part of the growth has been through contribution from Indian techies in the US. “In fact, their number is so big that soon someone may say it is an Indian company.”

The company has been operating in India for three years.

It has merged PortalPlayer, a technology solutions provider for digital devices, with itself to add significant capabilities in chip design.

Growth driver

Nvidia is keen to provide all the features of a PC in mobile devices.

It is this important driver that brought Nvidia and PortalPlayer together.

PortalPlayer is among the first companies to develop all personal computing capabilities on a single chip, Mr Jen said.

He said that the company’s goal was to provide rich media on mobile devices seamlessly.
