New Delhi, Aug. 8 The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Wednesday said that the Government was committed to the present system of indirect fertiliser subsidy.

Dr Singh, who was chairing a meeting on fertiliser subsidy, added that the current system would have to be reviewed in the future.

“While the existing subsidy system may have to be reviewed in the future, the Government is committed to the present system and will ensure that adequate funds are available to meet the requirement this year,” an official release from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said.

The Prime Minister has also directed the Finance and Fertiliser Ministry to ensure that adequate funds were available for the disbursement as subsidy. The release added that the PMO will resolve matters in this regard.

The meeting was attended by the Union Agriculture Minister, Mr Sharad Pawar; the Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram; the Chemicals and Fertiliser Minister, Mr Ram Vilas Paswan; and the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Mr T.K.A. Nair.

Earlier in the day, the Centre assured the Orissa Government that it would provide adequate quantity of fertilisers to help the State reduce its dependency on imports.

“We would take necessary steps to ensure sufficient quantity of fertilisers was made available to the State to enable it reap a good harvest,” Mr Paswan said after meeting the Orissa Chief Minister, Mr Naveen Patnaik, here on Wednesday.

Mr Patnaik had called on the Minister to apprise of the non-availability of fertilisers in various parts of the State. “Orissa has so far received Essential Commodities (EC) allocation of only 1.34 lakh tonnes and needs at least 2 lakh tonnes of urea through the EC allocation for the remaining period of the ongoing kharif season. For which the Minister has assured to provide all the necessary help,” Mr Patnaik said.
