IT cos give Rs 3.5 cr for campus road

T.E. Raja Simhan

Chennai, Oct. 11 Information technology companies in the Siruseri Industrial Park on the IT corridor have come forward to contribute money for road development inside the campus.

Out of the 11 companies located in the campus, nine will contribute around Rs 3.5 crore — 50 per cent of the total Rs 7 crore – for road development, according to Mr Ravi Viswanathan, head of Chennai operations, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

“This is a unique model that can be replicated elsewhere in the city. It benefits both the industry and the government,” he told Business Line.

TCS is building one of its biggest software development centres inside the IT campus in 70 acres to accommodate around 25,000 employees.

The state-owned Sipcot (State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu), which developed the park, appealed to all IT companies to contribute to the fund, Mr Viswanathan said.

“We have agreed that we will not lay roads now and wait for the monsoon to get over. We are basically funding as an IT group and make sure that the funds are utilised to improve roads within the campus,” he said.

Mr Viswanathan said only the funding has been done and nothing beyond that. They have not dug up the roads. A task committee has been set up, and a proper planning needs to be done.

From the company’s (TCS) perspective, ‘we are happy to do the funding.’ It makes a lot of sense to be part of the ecosystem.

It will be good industry-government participation, he said.
