Bangalore, Jan. 11 The much-hyped talent shortfall in the IT sector may really not be such an alarm after all. Speaking to reporters here at the announcement of Infosys Technologies’ third quarter results, Mr T.V. Mohandas Pai, Head of HR, Infosys, said that the industry is now looking at right skilling (matching skills for specific job requirement) to expand the labour pool in the industry.

“BScs and other graduates are now adding to the depth and the width of the talent pool and this will not only solve the shortage issue but also have a positive impact on wage inflation in future years,” he said.

Staff strength

Infosys plans to make a gross addition of 31,000 employees to its talent pool by the end of FY08, 30-35 per cent of which would be laterals and about 1,400 of them non-Indians. The company had already made 18,000 campus offers to students expected to join the company in FY 09, Mr Pai said.

For the quarter ending December 31, 2007, the tech major had made a gross addition of 11,863 employees (net 8,100) comprising 2,500 laterals. Currently, 83,011 of the total employee strength of 88,601 are software engineers.

The company reported a talent utilisation rate of 69.4 per cent (including trainees) and 76.3 per cent (excluding trainees). Attrition for the quarter stood at 13.7 per cent. Revenue per employee rose 0.8 per cent this quarter and 1 per cent on an average over the last four quarters.

Utilisation levels stood a tad lower at 76.3 per cent (excluding trainees) but Mr Pai explained it saying, “There was a large intake of trainees in the quarter ended September. This happens when there is trainee movement. Also, a lower utilisation level means we are ready to quickly change gear for large and new projects.”

Plans on ESOP

Responding to a query, Mr Pai said that the company has no plans of reviving the stock option plan for employees.

Commenting on the readiness of the Mysore facility, he said that the delay (which was due to unavailability of cement), had been fixed and would get resolved this fiscal.
