Security Industry & Economy - Terrorism Government - Policy Govt gives nod for radar coverage of coastline
Our Bureau New Delhi, Dec. 20 In an effort to enhance coastal security, the Government has not only approved a proposal to provide radar coverage of the entire coastline but also asked the Coast Guards to lease or hire ships from the global market in the quickest possible time. These were among a slew of proposals cleared at a high-level meeting held by the Defence Minister, Mr A.K. Antony, here on Saturday to augment coastal security. The meeting also decided that acquisition of cutting-edge equipment and interceptor boats will be done on a fast-track basis, an official statement issued here adds. The Defence Secretary, Mr Vijay Singh; the Director-General, Coast Guards, Vice-Admiral Anil Chopra; and the Director-General, Acquisition, Mr S.K. Sharma, also attended the meeting. No specificsThe setting up of nine additional Coast Guard stations was also approved and the proposal will soon be sent to the Union Cabinet for its nod. Sources were tight-lipped on providing the cost of the package. There was also no mention of the number of ships or interceptor boats to be hired, leased or acquired. The Coast Guards have also been asked to coordinate with the State Governments for electronic identification of all vessels entering Indian waters. It was also decided to deploy additional ships and aircraft in the coastal region. Information sharingThe Coast Guards have also been asked to coordinate with the Navy and intelligence agencies for sharing of information to prevent any other incident. The review was done in the backdrop of the recent terror attack in Mumbai. The terrorist involved in the attack all came to the city through the sea route in small boats.
