Online market place Snapdeal is planning to focus on the North-Eastern States as a part of its growth strategy for this fiscal.

North-East operations generally come under the Eastern region.

According to Ashish Chitravanshi, vice-president, Operations, Snapdeal, North-East has emerged as one of the fastest growing regions for the company.

According to the company, nearly 6 per cent of its total orders and 12 per cent of sales in the fashion category (apparels, accessories and so on) come from the region. Electronics too is a major category for the e-tailer. Nearly 80 per cent of payments there are through cash-on-delivery.

“The North-East has been one of the fastest growing regions for us and it continues to be a focus area. There has also been a steady increase in orders there,” he told BusinessLine .

Chitravanshi, however, did not specify the rise in orders that the region has witnessed; but maintained Guwahati and Aizawl to be the two most prominent locations.

Logistics In the coming days, Snapdeal might explore the option of setting up a warehouse facility.

The lone such facility catering to the East and North-East region sellers is located in Uluberia, Howrah, on the western outskirts of Kolkata.

Asked if the company was planning another such warehouse to cater exclusively to the North-East, Chitravanshi said: “May be in the future. We keep taking stocks.”

At present, the e-tailer — which acts as an aggregator between the buyer and seller and does not own the products — has 915 sellers in the North-East and serves 6,253 pin-codes.

Focus will also be on increasing the seller-base, which in turn will shore-up its customer-count.

According to Chitravanshi, Snapdeal — which is backed by SoftBank, Foxconn and Alibaba Group — has improved its delivery time in the region.

While it works with 20 partners nationally, including India Post and its own logistics arm gojavas , in the North-East it has nine partners.

“We have been able to bring down the average delivery time by 70 per cent over the last one year. We are leveraging our logistics partners’ support through improved transport and distribution footprint, thereby, improving consumer experience,” he said.
