In order to prevent transformer fires at places like cinema and shopping malls, US-based technology firm, Sentry Depressurization Systems Inc is eyeing Indian power sector through its transformer safety systems – SentryDS.

The company, which has already started selling its transformer safety systems to private and public enterprises in India, will also set up a manufacturing facility in Bangalore for manufacturing of the Depressurization systems.

“The technology is unique in itself. It prevents the transformers to catch fire or blast. We are very optimistic about Indian market and plan to set up manufacturing facility here to cater to the Indian market,” Jeffery Berkowitz, Chairman of Sentry Depressurization Systems told Business Line.

The technology, which suits to all transformers starting from 15 MVA, is seen as a solution for the oil-filled transformers, which are at high risk of catching fire or blast due to overload or over usage.

According to Berkowitz, the response times by the current protective devices are too slow to react when a rupture takes place in the tank of oil-filled transformers. Currently, most of the oil-filled transformers have devices such as Circuit breakers, Buchholz Relay, Sudden Pressure Relay, Gas Monitoring and Pressure Relief Valve to prevent fire or release pressure.

But, when the pressure mounts due to overload on the transformers, the rupture takes place in the tank within 12 milliseconds, to which most protective devices fail to respond.

“Our fast depressurization system opens at 5.1 milliseconds and releases the pressure before the static pressure can develop. This saves the tank from rupture, and prevents the fire and explosions,” said M S R Rao, head for Asia-Pacific at Sentry Depressurization Systems.

“We will have a manufacturing unit near Bangalore. However, the plan is still at the initial stage, hence the investment outlay has not yet been decided,” Rao said.

The company eyes nearly 30-40 % of its global revenues from Indian market.
