Small cardamom prices continued to witness a firmer trend last week on strong domestic demand at auctions held in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Total arrivals last week at 12 auctions remained moderate at 554 tonnes, trade sources said.

The upsurge was visible in Monday morning auction conducted by Cardamom Planters Association (CPA) in Bodinayakannur where the average price shot up by ₹95 a kg from that of the previous Monday. The average price today stood at ₹788.64 against ₹693.

A total of 23.5 tonnes of cardamom arrived and almost the entire quantity was traded. Normally, the prices at this auction used to be at lower levels when compared with other auctions due to the quality of material.

Given the current trend, the average price at today afternoon auction is expected to cross ₹800 a kg, PC Punnoose, General Manager, CPMC told BusinessLine.

As the prices are moving up, exporters have slowed down. They are estimated to have bought about 30 tonnes only last week, market sources in Bodinayakannur said.

Good colour 8 mm bold capsules were fetching ₹1,150-1,200 a kg, they said. Good bulk was being traded at ₹725-750 a kg.
